We strive to accept all interested students if they are of the correct age and have a great attitude.
Requirements: Currently enrolled in any dance class at HDC ages 6 to 18 years old.
Here are the opportunities, YOU CAN be in ONE, TWO OR ALL TEAMS DEPENDING ON AGE:
#1 Hip Hop Sr team: Ages 9 and up, hip hop routine, Music: some cool mash up I haven’t made yet, High energy with classic hip hop moves and tricks
#2 Hip Hop jr team: Ages 6-10 hip hop routine for our younger or less experienced dancers to Happy Dance by Scott&Mark Hoying
#3 Jazz Team: Ages 9-18, Jazz routine. Music: TBA High energy, sassy routine with kicks, ripples and jumps
#4 Lyircal team: Ages 9-18, Lyrical routine, Music: TBA High energy with strength and story telling, turns and flexibility
#5 Tap Team + Jr Jazz team: Ages 6-18 Music: Michael Jackson mash up with tap dancers 7 and up with appropriate skill, and jazz funk ages 6-10 (all would wear the same costume but we have 2 styles of dance happening at the same time)
To participate, you must commit to the following:
Choreography Classes begin during Christmas break with a 3-4 hour practice one of the days to get most of the choreography learned. After Christmas (Jan and Feb), practices are scheduled on Saturdays. Some of thegroups will practice in the late morning, some will practice Saturday evenings. Attendance is crucial. All absences must be excused ahead of time. Times are subject to change after we know who is registering for what team. If you cannot make a practice, you are REQUIRED to notify me via text or email. Each Team practice schedule is posted- look it over carefully. IF YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT DAYS YOU WOULD MISS, PLEASE LMK ASAP SO I CAN ADJUST AS NEEDED. The schedule is NOT etched in stone, it may change depending on who registers and if there are for sure all 5 teams.
How Competition Works: After I register us, the competition puts together the schedule of all the studios and routines about 2 weeks before. They send the schedule to me. We will only compete once during the weekend, NOT multiple days. If you are on 1 team, you will only be required to be there one day. However, we won’t know which day until a couple weeks ahead of time. I can make requests, but there is no guarantee they will be met. Just talk to me about it. On competition weekends: We often stay at the same hotel and team build and just have fun between routines. The first comp is at Kalahari Resort. You are NOT required to stay there, but Ive already made a reservation and I can add 5 more people to my room to make it more affordable. You can also just show up the day you are scheduled to dance at each comp.
What if parents or other sibling have conflicts on that weekend? I grew up going to comps without my parents EVER. I always had to get a ride. I love the support families give each other now days, but as a team, we will all work together to get your dancer to his or her competition as needed. I love the TEAM vibe and everyone of all ages getting to know each other. All the events are live streamed so parents and families can watch if they are not there. Can you bring the whole family if you want? Yes! There is no fee for families to attend the comps or to watch. It is hectic though.
When we get the schedules, I will post a call time for each routine. Many comps run ahead of schedule so we are required to be at the event, READY TO COMPETE with hair, makeup, costume, and warmed up, 2 hours ahead of the scheduled performance time. We all meet, parents kiss their babies, then go sit in the auditorium. The dancers all go with me and we go to work, warm up, take pictures, look at the stage, go over the routines, etc. Sometimes, I get to leave them backstage and watch from the audience since I am not allowed to coach from the side. Dancers have to know their routines by heart. After they perform, we all go meet in the hall or lobby to greet them and tell them how wonderful they did! Then you are free until AWARDS! Awards ceremonies are exciting at first, then quickly get boring if you don’t know what to expect. I will talk to all teams about how it works before we go. After awards, I go onstage to get a pic of them all with their award, then you are free to go.
Entry fees ½ Due Nov 20, 2026, second half due JAN 9, 2027. $250 total per person PER group TEAM, if it ends up being a duet or Trio $310, solo are $614– I will NOT pay these in for you and will NOT register your student with the competition until it is paid in full. (example: dancer wants to be on hip hop team and lyrical team both end up being with at least 4 makes it a small group so the entry fees would be 250+250=500 total) Dancers interested in a solo should talk to me asap. (a group routine is required in order to do a solo)
#1 SHOWSTOPPER at Sandusky (Kahalari resort) Weekend of Feb 19-21 (you don’t have to stay here but I have room for 5 more in my reservation!)
#2 BREAKOUT in Detroit area weekend of Feb 26-28
#3 SOAR in Grand Rapids area weekend of Mar 5-6
Costume: *$95 per team costume due at sign up, tights $10 if needed, appropriate shoes per team.
Makeup: False eyelashes $9 –same as last year
Make up: Smokey eye, eyeliner, mascara, red glitter lips kit Price TBA about $65
Jewelry: earrings 18 mm $12. Optional: NEW studio jacket price TBD $120-150ish.
Tuition and Choreography Fee: Each member of each team group or duet/trio or solo pays the studio $250 total for choreography, studio time, and tuition. This can be broken down into 4 payments of $62.50 starting inDec-Mar or paid in one lump sum. Interested in joining more than 1 team? DISCOUNT for additional teams is $50! So after the first team, all additional teams are only $200, which can also be broken down into 4 monthly payments. Want to be on all the teams that you are eligible for + do a solo? Talk to me about additional tuition discounts. Besides myself, we have other instructors doing choreography (Miss April and Miss Jordyn and Miss Kara will all be involved)
